At school, they have a program that teaches students about growing foods and using them to make food. The Year 3 students get to help out for 1 term while the older grades do it throughout the year. Every other week the entire school can order the meal the students prepare.
I helped with the gardening part. I use the word help, loosely. I have never had a food garden myself. Flowers- yes. My Grandma had amazing food gardens at their home. My mom and dad have grown various things over the years as well. I learned to plant lettuce and onions near each other. The kids seemed really interested in the garden part. They were excited to plant new things and harvest the lettuce for lunch that day.
Later in the day, the Grade 3s & 4s came back down to make themselves lunch. I was in charge of supervising the tortilla rolling. MA was in the group that chopped all the ingredients. The kids worked very well together & the only big mess I witnessed was when a container slipped out of my hands and spilled a portion on the floor. Go me! We made burritos. I sat & ate lunch with MA and a couple of her friends. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. I even asked for the recipe.
